SUBTRACTION OF POLYNOMIALS

Find the difference between 2x - 3y + 2 and 5x + 2y - 3.

Solution:

Using the definition of subtraction and putting together similar terms, we have:

(2x - 3y + 2) - (5x + 2y - 3)

= 2x - 3y + 2 - 5x - 2y + 3

= 2x - 5x - 3y - 2y + 2 + 3

= - 3x - 5y + 5

Or, we can rearrange them in rows and subtract by changing the signs of each term in second row.

   2x - 3y + 2
- 5x - 2y + 3
- 3x - 5y + 5
